State Street: The Global Investor Confidence Index<\/span> increased<\/span> to<\/span> 8<\/span>9<\/span>.<\/span>3<\/span>,<\/span> up 4<\/span>.<\/span>5<\/span> points from<\/span> December\u2019s<\/span> revised reading of<\/span> 84.8<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The increase was led by a rebound in<\/span> European ICI<\/span>, which bounced back<\/span> a significant<\/span> 18.2 points from <\/span>December\u2019s low to 85.3.<\/span> Asian ICI rose slightly, up 1.7 points to 97.1, but was offset by a 1.4 point decline in <\/span>North American ICI to 93.6<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>

\u201c<\/span>Investors continued to shy away from risk assets in January as the global ICI<\/span> continued to<\/span> hover close<\/span> to<\/span> its <\/span>weakest reading in over a year,\u201d commented Rajeev Bhargava, head of Investor Behavior Research, State Street <\/strong><\/span>Associates.<\/strong> \u201cSentiment within the US<\/span> remained subdued as an increasingly hawkish stance from the Fed, rising <\/span>Covid<\/span> infection rates locally due to<\/span> the<\/span> O<\/span>micron<\/span> vari<\/span>a<\/span>nt<\/span>, and a disappointing start to earning season likely led to a <\/span>continued reassessment of allocations away from higher beta assets<\/span> . On a more positive tone, investor <\/span>confidence across Europe recovered<\/span> a bit<\/span> as the regional ICI<\/span> rose<\/span> 18 points from December\u2019s reading. Absolute <\/span>levels, however, still remain consistent with risk averse behavior, so it will be important to see if momentu<\/span>m <\/span>continues to build<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Investor<\/span> Confidence Index<\/span> was developed at State Street Associates, State Street Global Markets\u2019s <\/span>research and advisory services business, in partnership with FDO Partners.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>It<\/span> measures investor confidence or <\/span>risk appetite quantitatively by analyzing the actual buy<\/span>ing and selling patterns of institutional investors. The index <\/span>assigns a precise meaning to changes in investor risk appetite: the greater the percentage allocation to equities, <\/span>the higher risk appetite or confidence. A reading of 100 is neutral; it is the<\/span> level at which investors are neither <\/span>increasing nor decreasing their long<\/span>–<\/span>term allocations to risky assets. The index differs from survey<\/span>–<\/span>based <\/span>measures in that it is based on the actual trades, as opposed to opinions, of institutional investors.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
